A day of disasters
What a day - it started off badly, but luckily things have quietened down.
The plumbers were starting today as the shower tray is leaking and making the walls damp. They were scheduled to start at 8.30am. About half an hour before they arrived, the dog was sick on the kitchen floor. He is a bull mastiff and a large dog - so the volume was large as well.
I apologise in advance to all you dog lovers - but I don't like the dog. He is old and stinks to high heaven, that coupled with the fact that Stephen never baths him gets him off to a bad start in my books. Plus he has a nasty habit of cocking his leg on items in the house: the duvet, Ethan's tent, the brand new sofa and washing hanging down on the line. Then the general mess that he makes scuffing up against walls and dribbling - get the picture?
So the unspoken (OK spoken) general rule that when the dog has an accident etc, Stephen clears it up. But he had already left for work and the plumbers needed access through the kitchen to get to the garden. Basically I had to clean up a huge pile of dog sick. Yuk! My stomach is so weak that I was practically sick myself.
The next not good thing to happen was that I was offered the job - but had to turn it down. I was unable to get childcare for one day out of the three, which in itself was not good. But then I worked out the cost of holiday care and it worked out that for the 11 or 12 weeks of holiday I would be working just to pay the play scheme.
The third pain in the arse was that the shower tray had been leaking so badly that the walls are sodden and need about three days to dry out. So here I am in the summer, with the heating on and all the windows open to try and dry it out.
On the plus side was that I managed to finish my needlecase. I am going to make another for myself and will be putting one in my shop.
The inside is polka dot cotton and white felt pages. I am going to try and finish the tape measure tonight and pack it all ready for tomorrow.

What a rotten day. I'm so sorry about the dog mess, plumbing problems, work delimia, etc.
But the needlecase is beautiful, and you certainly deserve to be rewarded with something pretty right now.

I have to admit I am not a big dog person either, my boys want a dog so badly and I keep putting it off. I empathize totally.
I love the gifts you are making. They are so unique and beautiful.
Is there no avenue of work in the sewing field, that could be done from home. I don't mean hours of piece work, something more like clothing alterations for locals, making bridesmaid dresses, that kind of thing. There is a well known lady in my neighbourhood who turns trousers up for $10 a pop and also does dress alterations. She had an ad in our local newspaper and also on the supermarket noticeboard.
Keep your chin up, something will come along that fits your lifestyle needs.

Ugh, don't you just hate days like that?! I hope tomorrow turns out to be better. Lovely needlecase.

Yuck. Sorry. A day best left out of the memory banks it sounds like. Glad you had a little sewing therapy!

It's never my job when my cat is sick either. But when I'm the only one home I'm like you and can barely control my own stomach. Hope you have a better start to the day tomorrow.
Do you have zig zag-y scissors (I'm sure there's a better name for them)? I need some of those.

Days like the one you wrote about, I call the 'domino effect'...one thing after another keeps happening, when you started out with thinking that the plumbers were the only thing on the list. Like my shelf falling in the kitchen, sending all the plates, platters and bowls into a pile of broken bits on the floor and then biting on a piece of leftover pizza in a rush and cracking off half a molar. Days like that we can do without. How you found the piece of mind to continue sewing with a sick dog and soggy walls, astounds me!
